Day 1-Talkeetna- 2 Jul

North to Alaska!

We are finally about to depart. First coffees of the trip consumed (by the addicts).

The good thing about international travel is noise cancelling headphones!

The bad thing about international travel is having 400,000 Qantas points but being unable to use them even when trying to book 355 days in advance. Off to check out Virgin's loyalty program because business class looks very inviting if you want to sleep.

Arrived in LAX after 15hr flight and negotiated to Alaska Air to go to Anchorage 5hr flight.

This is our first view of Alaska from the plane - snow covered mountains!

Our first moose at anchorage airport!

Still on day 1 (which turned out to be 48 hours long) we picked up a Chevy Malibu at anchorage airport and headed to Wasilla to shop for some food for lunches.  They had half an aisle of peanut butters!

Then headed on to Talkeetna (where Northern Exposure was filmed) but got waylaid at a local micro brewery. We didn't partake of deep fried crepes with various savoury and sweet fillings but did try some of their beers.

Talkeetna is very busy! Every second car (not exaggerating) is s black F150 and they seem to be twice as big as ours in Oz. Denali wasn't out but we took photos anyway - Denali is in the bottom photo in the far distance.

Denali in the distance.

Dinner at Latitude 62 with the locals and we had halibut (blackened or grilled)  on salad (green or Caesar) with local beer (for those that drink it). Followed by homemade blueberry pie (they were out of rhubarb) Very nice.

It was 5* this am and 17 max. No bugs.

Stayed at Talkeetna roadhouse - old museum historic cottage. Self contained including kitchen.
