Day 11-Skagway-12 Jul

Skagway. Catching the Scenic Railway built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush up 3000 feet in the first 20 miles through White Pass to Fraser. Lots of steel bridges supporting the narrow railway and two tunnels cut into the rocky hillsides by manual labour. Hanging glaciers and Bridal Veil Falls.

The small bus picked us up at Fraser just after the boarder patrol checked everyone's passports. We saw a young black bear then, a few miles in we saw a baby bear.

Stopped at the Yukon and British Columbia border.

Passed by Tutshi Lake then saw Bove Island on Taglish Lake. At Carcross we had lunch at Caribou Crissing Trading Post with an Iditarod husky camp with husky puppies, husky mushing (Paul and Sandra took a ride behind the huskies) and there was an excellent museum with stuffed animals that looked real and huge!

Lunch in the old west fashion:

Then we saw Emerald lake. Calcium carbonate combined with the vegetation on the bottom of the lake cause the amazing colour.

Then back to Fraser via the same road. Then via the highway we hadn't seen while on the train. Amazing terrain smoothed by glaciers but still incredibly steep. Pitchfork falls and USA border patrol but they didn't check passports on the way back to Skagway.
