You don't actually go up the Matterhorn, you go up a nearby peak - Klein (little) Matterhorn so you can photograph the Matterhorn close up.
Apparently photos of the Matterhorn are more spectacular from Gornergrat so we went up there first then came down (40 mins each way once you are on the cog railway) and then walked to the other end of town and went up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise - 4 cablecars and some walking (40 mins). By the time we got to the panorama viewing platform the clouds had snuck in but the great thing was that it started snowing! -1°C and beautiful.
