Day -16 - Menorca - Mahon

 Free day to explore Mahon.

A large percentage of men here wear a crossbody bag or a leather bag attached with a belt at the hips (like a stylish bum bag but worn in front to store wallets and phones. Don’t know if it is to avoid pick pockets, because their jeans are too tight to put stuff in pockets or just for convenience. We did some washing this morning.

Don’t know if I mentioned but they advise you to buy bottled water to drink on Menorca.  (10 litres for €1.25). We think it’s because they rely on rain water which is scarce. Although it is heavy with lime and doesn’t taste 100% it is safe.

Windy, wet view from the balcony.
Church of Carmelite Friars built in 1750
The little door to the left leads to the Carmelite cloisters where there are markets.
Looking for “Mercat de Peix” but “Mercado de Pescados” is probably in Menorcan or Catalan or Spanish! Turn left for fresh fish market or right for a tapas, food and wine market.
There are quite a few separate shops inside but this is the one we went to (imagine 20 people in front of the cabinet) because it was local produce and they spoke English. Win, win. We got a seat because friends of ours had sensibly got there early and were about to leave.  The Spanish seriously take a siesta from 1pm-5pm. The only shops open are hairdressers and restaurants - I guess the workers have to eat!
Carrer de ses Moreres.
Pont de Sant Roc - last remaining gateway in the city wall built in 1359.
Carrer de la Infanta.
Glass lift up from the Port to the hotel level.
Naval base.
Mahon harbour is 8km long so the closer to the heads the more expensive moorings are. These are the cheaper ones!
10 km so far today.
