Portland, Maine. Most of the city of Portland was burnt down three times. After the fire in 1886. They rebuilt public buildings in brick and stone.
Sailing Captains built most of the houses along this street. Some are still single family residences while others have been converted to units, still retaining the character.

The Portland Observatory built in 1807 is the last remaining Maritime Signal Tower In the US. It’s a National Historic Landmark. Before wireless communication it received and sent signals to ships to organise new cargo and crews before they landed using a telescope and signal flags.
Portland Central Fire Station, an historic Art Deco building, was built in 1924. It replaced a 19th-century central station destroyed by the Great Fire of 1866.
